Not Bunny Proof
Have been having problems with bunnies raiding in my pepper patch and eating all the sprouts. Put down strawberry cages to protect the plants. The bunnies have responded by tunneling under.

They're taunting me, I swear.

Gotta bury the netting nice and deep... or have bunny for dinner :)

The general consensus has actually been to put bunny heads on spikes as a warning to troublemakers. Or to make puppets out of their remains that lament the demise of their little bunny selves.

I know it's lean meat, but I swear the little bastards are getting fat.

We thought the cats in Boston were putting squirrel heads on spikes around their territory since they were always missing from the bodies. Didn't seem to work, though, they always came back.

Hm. Maybe it is time for snares and deadfall traps, then, even though I never got that merit badge in the Scouts.

rabbit trapping
No need for the scout merit badge, just some wire loops (I would suggest 0.5 mm stainless) at the appropriate height. Or good deadfalls (I like paiute style if I have the cordage, else a good figure 4 implementation will do. Just make sure you have a solid surface underneath the rock!

Re: rabbit trapping
I can usually manage the Paiute style deadfall once I think about it for a while, but I've never actually laid a snare. I don't think that Girl Scouts are expected to kill happy little bunnies; the lack of serious woodcraft contributed heavily to my lack of interest after a while.

Old guitar strings would be a good idea for the wire, then?

Re: rabbit trapping
It needs to be fairly thin and flexible (I've used the "softened" wire the times I've been up north and set snares for ptarmigan). How flexible are guitar strings?

Re: rabbit trapping
Depends upon the gauge, but the thinnest ones are relatively flexible. I've used several of them for necklace wire.

Re: rabbit trapping
If nothing else you could always heat them up if they are too springy.

And check what the local game laws allow and stipulate; you would not want to get snagged for a felony...

Hey, we actually had a cat that really used to behead her mice and leave these on the front porch. Just for fun, I (using rubber gloves, of course) set them face out to gross-out my friends and scare away more mice.

(Ragnvaeig, were you around for that? It was Sassy, you know, the one who also used to behead rats.)

There. Enlarge this picture, laminate and hang in your garden. Make certain you include a caption about the 3 bunny masacree last summer. =THAT= will take care of all your problems.

Get some pepper spray and nuke around the plants with that? Go to a barber shop and get some hair clippings and broadcast all over the garden? Hell, better yet; go to PETCO and get dog hair clippings!

Good luck.

I actually saw a bunny =dance= upon Carmelita's grave, the little blighter!

Bastiges!

Himself has offered to lie in wait with the hunting-tipped arrows, but I'm worried about puncturing the entrails on a critter that's so small it'd probably spoil the meat.

Oh, and if Gary gets a deer this year, I'll try to have the weekend free to help butcher.
